Homemade Halloween

Updated: Sep 29, 2021

Fall is my absolute favorite season. I love the weather, the colors, the holidays… Fall keeps us busy in the best way. It starts with Declan’s birthday in September, followed by the festive dress-up days of Homecoming Week. Then comes Halloween and all the parties, fall festivals, and pumpkin patches. Coming down from the Halloween high, we move right into Thanksgiving and Everett’s late November birthday. Nonstop fall fun. I live for it!

My claim-to-fame that I hold most dear to my heart is that I make all of my kids’ Halloween costumes. I cherish this opportunity every year and do not take it for granted, because I know the days are numbered. Soon my boys will be too cool for mom’s homemade Halloween costumes and that’s fine. I’ll keep at it for as long as they will allow me!

I have something special planned for this year’s costumes that is currently in the works, but I thought I’d show my favorites from earlier years. These were all very easy and cheap.

Charlie Brown. Declan was only one month old for his first Halloween so I kept it simple. Black zigzag on a yellow onesie to mimic Charlie Brown’s iconic look. Could not be easier.

Mario. We teamed up with another baby to create the duo of Mario and Luigi. Overalls, spray-painted hats, and yellow felt as oversized buttons. Easy.

Tractor. This one looks complicated, but it really isn’t. It’s a diaper box covered with leftover fabric I had laying around. Construction paper and paper plates were used to decorate it and ribbons were attached to go over Declan’s shoulders.

Woody and Buzz. I also made Jessie for my cute niece. This was my favorite. Felt, foam, and hot glue.

Wreck-it Ralph and Fix-it Felix. I mostly used what we had for this one. I did thrift the overalls and dye them to be the right color. Felix’s hat was also purchased and personalized.

And last but not least, Mike and Sully. This is super easy. T-shirts and hard hats from Hobby Lobby. The shirts were decorated with felt and fabric glue.

And there you have it! Cute, homemade, one-of-a-kind costumes don’t have to cost a fortune or require the skills of a royal dressmaker. Stay tuned for this year’s costumes!
