I got married at Mexico Beach in April 2014. It was the most beautiful day of my life up until that point. We tied the knot in a tiny chapel nestled in the gardens of the Driftwood Inn just a little ways off the beach. We shared that day with only 17 guests and our photographers.
We tried to make every part of our wedding as intimate as possible. Tripp‘s grandfather officiated our wedding. My brother, Kason, and Tripp’s sister, Lacey, were our only wedding party. Lacey also baked and decorated our wedding and groom’s cakes. But my favorite detail of our wedding was my wedding dress, which was actually my mom’s wedding dress taken apart and recreated for me by, of course, Lacey.
I still think it’s the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen. It’s a work of art, really, and I hated the idea of storing it away after the wedding. I searched the farthest corners of Pinterest to find a way to display my wedding dress, but came up empty. Instead, I left it folded in my hope chest for seven years.
When I took it out to dress up and play in the creek with my boys, of course it got filthy and had to be washed. Freshly washed but still wet, I hung it up on the curtain rod in my bedroom to dry. It has been there ever since.
Look at how the light filters through it! I can’t get over it. It‘s still as beautiful as the day I walked down the aisle in it and I love seeing it everyday. I especially love how it can be seen all the way from the dining room.
Seven years. I missed out on this view for seven years because I thought I needed a fancier way to keep my dress out to enjoy everyday.
Yes it’s going to get dusty and will probably become discolored as time goes on, but it‘s going to age regardless. I may as well enjoy it.
So if you’re reading this because you, too, have been racking your brain for a way to display your wedding dress—don’t overthink it. Just hang up the dress.
